UGH! Dandelions. Dandelions EVERYWHERE. They get in the yard, in my garden and in my flowers. They are pesky and really hard to get rid of! But WAIT! This blog is about seeing beauty in simple things and looking at the positive side of life! I am a healer in my home! Maybe I should change my perspective a bit??
As I was perusing through pinterest, I stumbled upon a recipe for dandelion salve. It took me to thenerdyfarmwife website which was so fun!! Check out the recipe here:
THEN, I got to looking into all the claimed health benefits of dandelions! I already knew that they were known to be a great detox for the liver because I have bought dandelion root tea (not a fan). But as I started investigating further, I found out the there are also health benefits for your liver, skin, and kidneys. Not to mention inflammation, cholesterol and blood pressure. WOW! I was inspired. I like to be thrifty and I don't like to be wasteful... so when I found out that dandelions can be used for so many health benefits, in addition to things like jelly, pesto and wine - well, sign me up, because I seem to have an unlimited supply!
So, I made my mind up to try the dandelion salve, and if it works, I will see what other brilliant things I can do with this little gem of nature. As I got to picking, it was amazing how it conjured up memories from my childhood. As kids, we used to pick dandelions for mom, rub them on our cheeks for "warpaint" or "blush" depending on the game that day, and draw with them on the sidewalk. It was great fun convincing other kids and out-of-town cousins that dandelion "milk" was good for you, then falling down laughing at the funny faces they made when they stuck their tongue to the bitter white substance at the end of the stem. And of course, you just have to pick them and blow off the end while making a wish when they seed out. Another memory came to mind of picking buckets full of dandelions when my Dad wanted to try his hand at dandelion wine. I don't know whatever became of that wine, but I don't think it turned out as planned!
Anyway, back to my picking! I had a little help...
Stop for a minute to admire, and this really is a beautiful flower!
Sometimes I think I was born in the wrong century. ( Even though I know God doesn't make mistakes like that!) I love reading and learning about pioneers and ancient cultures and what they used for medicine. If there is a freebie growing in my backyard - why NOT use it? So, now my dandelions are drying and getting ready for a lovely oil infusion. I can't wait to finish this salve and show you the final product. One little thing (just because I HAVE to) ... I will be adding a bit of essential oils to this one!
